The Role of Educational
Screening Assessments

Educational Screening Assessments do not diagnose dyslexia.

In this process, screening tests are administered. Educational Screening assessments provide detailed estimates or indications of the learner's unique strengths and weaknesses and thereby provide a roadmap for the design of individualized intervention that will begin at the learner's current level of skill development

Screening Assessments

Components of the Screening Assessment

Test of Oral Reading Fluency (ORF):

Measures a student's ability to read aloud with speed and accuracy, indicating overall
reading proficiency.

Phonological/Phonemic Awareness:

Assesses a learner's ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken language,
which is crucial for developing reading skills.

Nonsense Word Assessment

Evaluates a student's ability to decode unfamiliar words, helping to gauge phonics skills and
sound-letter correspondence.

Rapid Naming Assessment:

Tests the speed at which a student can name familiar items, linking rapid retrieval of information to reading fluency.

Spelling Assessment

Measures a student's ability to spell words correctly, reflecting their understanding of phonics and orthographic patterns.

Reading Comprehension Assessment:

Evaluates a learner's ability to understand and interpret text, indicating their overall
comprehension skills.

Decoding Survey
